A 23-year-old, Alabi Yakubu, who allegedly broke into an apartment and stole necklace and other valuables worth N105,000 was, on Tuesday, brought before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Yakubu, a resident of Apapa, is also alleged to have assaulted the complainant, Wahab Ismaila,  after stealing from him.

The accused pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and assault.

But the prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 6 at Eradiri Street, off Ojo Road, Ajegunle, Apapa.

Elibeh alleged that the accused conspired with others now at large and broke into the apartment of the complainant and stole cash, necklace and other valuables worth N105,000.

He said the accused not only stole thefrom Wahab Ismaila complainant’s valuables, but also assaulted him by beating him to a pulp, when he tried to shout for help.

The accused was apprehended by the complainant’s neighbours, who heard Ismaila shouting for help, while his accomplices escaped with the stolen items, he said.

The offences contravened the provision of Sections 171 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Sections 171 and 285 prescribe a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm and stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the accused a bail of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned further hearing in the case until April 26. (NAN)
