An Upper Customary Court I sitting at GRA, Sabongari, Zaria, Kaduna State, has sentenced one Abbati Yusuf  to nine months’ imprisonment for stealing a power generator worth N35,000.

The trial judge, Mrs Patience Musa, who convicted and sentenced Yusuf, however, gave him an option of  N20,000 fine.

Yusuf, a resident of Zaria, had pleaded guilty as charged, and pleaded for mercy.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Bashir Umar, said that policemen on patrol arrested Yusuf with the generator.

He said: “On Oct. 10, at about 11:00p.m., one Special Constabulary, Cpl. Ibrahim Usman attached to Divisional Police Headquarters, Sabongari, while on surveillance patrol on Sokoto Road by MTD Junction, arrested and brought to the station, one Abbati Yusuf of Panwanki, Zaria.”

The prosecutor said that the suspect was found to be in possession of a Tiger power generator valued at N35,000.

“During an investigation, the suspect confessed to have stolen the property from Anguwan Maigwado Sabongari, Zaria.

“Thereafter, a complainant, one Yusuf Sale, from Angwan Maigwado, surfaced at the Divisional Police Station and claimed to be the rightful owner of the generator,” he said.

Umar noted that stealing  contravenes Section 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code. (NAN)
