Meet Robert Cornegy, the 53-year-old New York Councilman, who was awarded the title of ‘tallest male politician’ in the world by Guinness World Records.

At six foot 10 inches, Cornegy was given the title which was previously held by a British Member of Parliament named Sir Louis Gluckstein, who measured 6-foot-7-1/2 inches.

Cornegy was honoured with the title at a City Hall ceremony after being officially certified by Guinness World Records.

Cornegy, who is a former professional basketball player, is a city councilman who represents Brooklyn.

He even posted about his win on Instagram. “It was a pleasure to accept @guinnessworldrecords title of world’s tallest elected official from @nycmayor at NY City Hall today surrounded by my children and friends. More than anything, I hope this record shows young people that they need not feel limited by their appearance. Follow your passion no matter what other people say you should do. There is more than one way to make a difference!” he wrote.

Cornegy had initially thought of going for the title two years ago, after a constituent jokingly told him “you have to be the tallest politician ever.”

“What I went through to get this measurement was borderline ridiculous,” said Cornegy. “But I think it was worth it to bring that designation to New York – and Brooklyn.”

Apparently, his height was recorded while he was lying on the floor, which generally produces a greater measurement.

While receiving his title, Cornegy joked, I started to get worried because this whole process took two years. As a man over 50, I thought I would certainly lose the record if I waited another two years.

Cornegy says being tall has its challenges, especially shopping for shoes and clothes.
