Nigerian singer, Uwale Okoro, popularly known as Essence, is the voice behind Nigeria’s widely watched soap opera Super Story.

This multiple-award winning, Itsekiri, Delta State-born singer is also an actress and songwriter. She spoke with Sunday Sun lately about her relationship with her mother.

What was your childhood like?

Our home was like Fuji house of commotion (Laughter). My parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Okoro, have seven children; three boys and four girls.  I’m the youngest child and their last daughter. However, our family increases during holidays or festive periods with extended family members from both parents. In fact, it was fun growing up with different people. I will forever remember when my eldest brother, Kenneth Okoro, took us for relaxation at Apapa Amusement Park, Lagos. In fact, he is an embodiment of brotherhood and I will forever cherish his affection towards me.

How would you describe your mum?

My mum, Mrs. Melodia Okoro, is a dynamic and devout Christian. She’s a positive thinker.

What do you love most about her?

My mum would go the extra mile for her children and she never relented in making us comfortable.

What were your challenges and how did she tackle them?

I haven’t shared this before with anyone, because it’s my testimony but I will. We had bitter experiences in our rented apartment at Surulere. Our landlord evicted us without notice in 1999. I was barely a teenager, but I will always appreciate our parents and neighbours who assisted in securing some of our property. The experience made me sturdy and courageous. Interestingly, the landlord threw us out to embrace our glory and today, my parents are landlords also in Surulere. Our street is named after our family.

What did your mum teach you that you cherish?

I learnt positive living from my mum. She always told me to be always positive regardless of my circumstances.
