Last holiday abroad

Travel aboard is a yearly routine for me and my husband. We have a vacation home in Houston, that makes the city our base. One of our two daughters in the States, lives in Houston with her husband, the other with her husband is in Chicago. We normally travel for vacation during summer. Last year, it was in July. We spent about three months––July, August and September. We went first to Houston, and we travelled to Chicago for about a week. The Chicago weather is a bit cold; but because it was summer, it was quite appropriate. We had a mini cruise in Chicago, which we enjoyed so much. Chicago is beautiful. We then went to Los Angeles, California. It was my husband birthday, and we wanted to celebrate with a few friends in LA. So we had an interesting one week. We returned at the time our daughter and her husband had to take a one-week break, so my husband and I took over the children. We had to take them to school and doing the school runs turned out quite interesting. By the time their parents returned, our grandchildren didn’t want to let us go. Then we travelled to a wedding in Dallas. It was beautiful. We stayed in a good hotel where we had other friends that came from Nigeria. We were there for one week. On our trip back home, we spent a week in Dubai to chill off and do our final shopping.

First trip abroad

My first trip abroad was in my second year in university. It was very exciting. Our dad decided to give us a treat, myself and my immediate younger sister, it was a trip to London. He gave us very little money and we stayed with one of our aunts. It was fun. But within one week, we had finished our shopping money because we were so excited we were going from one shop to the other, so by the time you could say, Jack Robinson, our money was all gone. Without money, we wanted to come back to Nigeria. We managed to stay for about a month and returned to resume school.

Favourite cities

Las Vegas first. We love Las Vegas. My husband likes gambling, me, I love the shield in Las Vegas. I can say we stayed in most of the hotels in the strip, starting from Caesars Palace to Bellagio and Venetian Palazzo and a couple of others, we have virtually stayed in them because each hotel had something of its own to show.

We also enjoyed Chicago. It is equally a very beautiful city. Those two––Las Vegas and Chicago are my favourite cities in the United States.

Favourite meal abroad

I like the English breakfast. Breakfast in general, because equally in America, I love the breakfast there. In America, they have different ways of turning out the eggs, scrambled or vegetable omelette; whichever way, I love breakfast. The pork sausage, bacon, oh my God, I love them. Then the various types of breads, the croissants––I love breakfast in general.

The most essential travel tool should be your visa card. If there is anything you forget, be it at the airport, you can always buy a replacement. I always have it in my wallet. With your visa card, there is nothing you would say you have missed or you have forgotten.

Travel advice

By travelling, you see different cultures, you meet different people. You are relaxed, and relieved of tension. You look forward to new places you have not seen before and it is very exciting. At the end of the day when you are back, you are refreshed. This is my advice: At least once a year, people should take a trip out and see more about other people’s culture, see different parts of the world you have not seen before.

Ideal travelling companion

For some years now, it has been my husband. The children are all grown up and are on their own. Though, sometimes we have family trips together, but generally, most times my travelling is with my husband. We both enjoy travelling, and we both enjoy each other’s company.

Unforgettable moment

Many but I can point out the cruise to the Caribbean. It was just one week of me and my husband. That was quite amazing. We went with Oasis of the Seas cruise. Onboard was about 8,000 people––6000 guests and 2000 crew members. It was all fun––partying and eating. We had about 16 restaurants on board and one was free to eat as much as you want. It was just both of us in our room. We came out only when we wanted to meet people. We watched movies. It was one week of just fun, fun, fun. What a remarkable moment. We both enjoyed it. I can remember the day that was my husband’s birthday: at the restaurant, suddenly we saw people all around us; the servers brought in cake and wine and a bottle of champagne, they popped and they started singing “Happy birthday.” We were so surprised, it was really fun.

Travelling regret

Only once when I lost my suitcase. Not lost really. When we arrived I couldn’t find my suitcase and I had everything I needed in it. I felt bad. The suitcase was not recovered until after three days. So I had to start buying things. Apart from that incident, travelling for me is fun. I like travelling with my husband. There is virtually no part of the world we have not travelled to. For me, vacation is everything, particularly, with my husband around.
