The Nasarawa State Government has donated 500 mattresses and blankets to the state command of the Nigerian Prison Service for prompt distribution to prisoners across the state.

Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed  made the donation on behalf of the state government, on Wednesday, in Lafia,  to the Comptroller of Prisons Mr. Ekwere Ekanem.

The SSG said the donation was in fulfilment of the state governor’s promise during his visit to the Lafia prison on Democracy Day to alleviate the hardship prisoners faced in incarceration.

“Our caring governor has gladly given approval for the purchase for these products to be released to the prison service for swift distribution to prisoners across the state to alleviate the hardship they face in the prisons.

“I pray that it will prove useful to our prisons in the state, rehabilitate and mould the character of the prisoners in the near future to be responsible and law abiding Nigerians,” he said.

Also speaking, the Comptroller of Prisons in Nasarawa State, Mr. Ekwere Ekanem, expressed joy and gratitude to the state government for fulfilling its promise and showing kindness to inmates across the state.

“We are indeed very grateful for what we are witnessing this afternoon. When the governor made the pledge, we never anticipated it would be so soon. This shows the magnanimity and caring heart he posses. We are indeed grateful,” He said.

Ekanem revealed that currently, some inmates were either sleeping on bare floor or sharing with other inmates hence the need to swiftly commence the distribution of the mattresses on Wednesday afternoon starting from Lafia prisons.

“Immediately some of the mattresses will go to Lafia prisons for distribution and during the week, other prisons across the state will get their share because as i am talking to you, some of these inmates are sleeping on bare floor or sharing. This is not what we want in our prisons,” he said.
