The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), on Tuesday, distributed foods and other basic items to motherless children at the Children Reception Centre in Ilorin.

NAWOJ chairperson, Kwara chapter, Hajia Binta Mora, said the gesture was to extend a hand of fellowship to the needy as part of events to mark the association’s 2017 NAWOJ Week in the state.

Mora commended the administrators of the centre for their courage and compassion in caring for abandoned children.

The NAWOJ chairperson said that the association was committed to sensitising the public on the negative effects of abandoning babies in the society.

She advocated sex education in schools as a measure to check indiscriminate sex and unwanted pregnancies by teenagers.

Mora also prayed God to bless the motherless children and make them great in life.

In his address of welcome, , the Officer-in-Charge of the centre, Mr. Taiye Ikupolati, commended the gesture by NAWOJ.

He decried the high rate at which babies were being thrown away to die.

According to him, some mothers threw away their babies due to disease, deformity or insanity, among other reasons.

The items donated included foodstuffs, diapers, soaps, and toiletries among others. (NAN)
