The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has urged Nigerians to encourage the growth of local business initiatives to boost the economy as well as create jobs for young Nigerians.
Acting Director-General of the NDE, Mr. Kunle Obanya, who spoke at the 38th edition of the Kaduna Trade Fair in Kaduna, Kaduna State, also called for more collaborative efforts between the private and public sectors in tackling the challenge of unemployment.
Obanya said government alone could not effectively address job creation, especially under the current economic situation facing the nation.
He called on all other stakeholders to support the NDE in resettling beneficiaries of its programmes and schemes who, due to paucity of funds, may not enjoy any form of start-up facilities from the agency.
“The challenge of mass unemployment as it affects Nigeria calls for the active collaboration of government at all levels and indeed the private sector. Government alone cannot effectively shoulder the burden of employment creation, especially under the current economic situation facing the nation,” Obanya said.
Obanya explained that trade fairs and exhibitions remain veritable channels through which beneficiaries of the directorate are exposed and could gain valuable access to the business world, where growth opportunities abound.
He disclosed that 12,457 unskilled youth had in the last one year benefitted from the various employment creation initiatives of the directorate, adding that it has also completed the frame-work for the online registration of unemployed persons in Nigeria.
