Team Nigeria is guaranteed four medals in boxing already with the qualification of Ifeanyi Onyekwere, Jacinta Umunnakwe, Elizabeth Oshoba and Cynthia Ogunsemilore for the semifinals of their different weight classes of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
It was a brilliant start for Team Nigeria boxers after Ifeanyi Onyekwere crushed Marcel Jerome Mouafo Feujio of Canada by a unanimous decision (5-0) to book a place for himself in the Semi-Final stage at the Men’s Super-heavyweight +92kg.
Oshoba who her quarterfinal bouts after she defeated Tianna Guy of Trinidad & Tobago by 3-2 (Win on Points), while Ogunsemilore won hers against Aratwa Kasemang of Botswana by RSC (Referee Stops Contest).
Oshoba fought in the women’s 54kg-57kg Featherweight category, while Ogunsemilore’s was in the over 57kg – 60kg Lightweight.
Oshoba, the 2019 African Games bronze medalist faces a huge task in Saturday’s semi-final as battles an impressive Tina Rahimi of Australia who beat Sameenah Touissant of England by 5:0 in the quarter-final.
For Jacinta Umunnakwe, she’s assured of at least a bronze medal in the 70-75kg Women’s Boxing after her Tongan opponent pulled out of their quarter-final bout.
