Whilst the African premiere of the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sequel was ongoing in Lagos, social media was agog with another hashtag, #PremiereWahala trending across Nigeria. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the conversation resulted from allegations that the concept and designs for the branding and venue decor at Sunday night’s African premiere of Wakanda Forever were adapted by an events vendor without permission. So naturally, this has generated a lot of buzz and sparked reactions from netizens.
According to reports, the alleged defaulting company had reached out to the aggrieved party to collaborate to send a pitch for the Wakanda premiere job. However, after the organisers successfully chose the pitch with the help of the aggrieved party, the defaulting party informed them that they had decided to go with some other company. The aggrieved party warned against the use of their designs or concept to execute the project. However, some sources close to the case allege that the ideas and designs created by the aggrieved party were used at the premiere in Lagos at the weekend.
The allegations spread like wildfire, and many Twitter users expressed shock and disappointment that such intellectual property theft had gone unchecked.
“This is ridiculous. Just reading this #PremiereWahala story and I’m so angry. The pain of seeing your work being used but you didn’t get paid or anything is really unfair,” @suhailat tweeted.
Another user, @SandraJadee, wrote, “Imagine someone trusted you with their ideas, and then you shortchange them? This time the person no even get change, nothing. Evil! #PremiereWahala”
Some others urged the aggrieved party to do everything possible to ensure they don’t sweep the issue under the carpet. “How is this legal? Stealing someone’s ideas for your personal gain. Why is the victim keeping quiet? Come out and tell us make we support you, I beg.” -@bhlarg wrote.
