Nigerian women need empowerment to overcome common challenges –UK envoy

Deputy British High Commissioner, Laure Beaufils has urged Nigerians to encourage the empowerment of women and girls.

The envoy said the challenges facing Nigerian women and girls cannot be ignored and the society should not fail to take necessary action necessary action to empower them.  She said the women and girls need empowerment to be able to overcome the challenges they face daily. The envoy spoke in Lagos during a reception to honour women in the Arts.

Beaufils said the event was meant to celebrate women, pointing out that the Deputy High Commission supported the vision of the convener because it was in  line with what it does as consulate as a helping  Nigerian women to acquire creative skill for income generation.

“The conversation of interest is intended to explore contemporary dialogues surrounding different facets of time and events. Young female talents are making use of their creative work and would dominate what they need is encouragement, she said.

The convener of the event, Mrs Brenda Uphopho said when she had the  dream to establish a  world class festival  that would provide a platform for young thespians in Nigeria,  she never had a clue about  the  height they could attain.

She said they have surpassed her expectations. “Today the event has grown as it is now a combination of dreams aligned towards a unique goal of becoming a haven,” she said.

She noted that from little beginning with gele-tying, adire-making and ankara accessories, participants could be transformed into fashion line owners and exporters of cultural products if they can dream big and remain consistent. Uphopho expressed the determination to make Lagos the cultural hub of sub-Saharan Africa by 2024.

The Group Head Inclusive Banking, Access Bank PLC, Njideka Esomeju said the bank supported the initiative because it provided a platform for the banking firm to develop the society. Esomeju said the bank is committed to alleviating poverty by empowering women with talents to go to the next level and improve the living conditions of women who are seen as vulnerable group in the Society.
