On the role of the press, Professor Konyinsola said it is the responsibility of the media to show the way by constantly reporting the truth in order to guide the people properly. He said that a
situation where the press publishes fake news or allow itself to be bought with money would spell doom for the country.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion, Publisher of the Guardian Newspapers Limited, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru, said that the Press is constitutionally empowered to monitor governance and hold the people in authority accountable. She disclosed that, “ in 1979, our political leaders inserted the idea of federal character in the constitution to lighten the darkness called nepotism and sectionalism, but
regrettably, our leaders in recent times have been insensitive to the principle of federal character.” She expressed hope that true federalism would be restored in Nigeria.

Earlier, the General Secretary of The Bible Society of Nigeria, Dr. Dare Ajiboye encouraged Christians not to shy away from politics, but to participate in the promotion of democratic ideals in the country, even as he charged them to pray fervently for a better Nigeria.
