ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) branch, Ijagun, Ogun State has raised the alarm over non-release of 15 months subvention to the institution, saying the situation is crippling the university’s operations.
Addressing newsmen at ASUU TASUED secretariat, chairman of the union, Dr. Bayo Adesanya, who expressed worry over the trend, served Governor Ibikunle Amosun notice to pay the over N2 billion subvention owed the institution, warning that failure to do so could disrupt the peace on campus. Adesanya said series of meetings with Governor Amosun and top government officials yielded no result.
He said the state government used to give 70 percent subvention while the university, through its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) augmented it with 30 percent to pay workers salary, stressing that in the last 15 months, the university administration had picked the wage bills. The ASUU TASUED boss lamented that the government’s abdication of its responsibility to the institution has taken a toll on every facet of the university system, adding, “all efforts made for government to release the subvention to TASUED in the past 15 months have not been positive.’’
Adesanya, who put the current wage bill of the university at N175 million, said by the government’s subvention policy of paying 70 percent, the Amosun administration owed TASUED about N2 billion for 15 months.
