The Medical Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, has said that the centre has produced about 2, 000 babies within 14 years..

Ajayi who disclosed this in Onitsha, Anambra State during a seminar to educate the public on fertility, said that apart from helping couples to have their babies, the centre can do the test to determine the sex of the baby and to protect the baby from contracting any disease like albinism and sickle cell disORDER. Such diseases are prevented from transferring from the parents to the child.

According to him, “we help people to get their own babies, that is why we say we complete families. We started 14 years ago and we have clinics in Lagos, Asaba and Abuja. We have about 2, 000 babies from Nordica centre”.

“We put sperm and egg together, that means fertilisation outside the body. This is for the people who either their sperm count is very low, not very good enough or their tubes are blocked or any reason why fertilisation is not taking place in the body. We bring the sperm and egg together in a condition that makes it appear as if they have not left the body and when they form what is called an embryo, then we put it back and about 30 percent to 40 per cent of times it continues to become a baby”.

“So, it is like natural way of conception, the only thing that is different is that the fertilisation is done outside the body. It depends on what the problem is, that will determine the techniques to be used to get the embryo. So if the problem is from the woman, the technique is going to be different from if the problem is from theman. We call it In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

“Age plays a role in IVF, the success of the procedure depends on age of a woman but also we can reverse this age challenge  depending on where the eggs are coming from. When the eggs are from somebody else, the success rate is depends on the age of the person where the eggs are coming from. That is why when some people gets to a particular age they can be told to use donor eggs that will make the success rate to be better. But now we can understand that it is possible to store eggs, a young girl can store her eggs and when she gets to a certain age she can use them. So, age is a good determinant of success in IVF.

“We can help a man when his sperm count is low or when he doesn’t have sperm at all. We can go to the testes which is like warehouse for the sperm, we can go there look for sperm, if there are sperms from the testes, we can use it, If there is none, we have to resort to donor sperm. It is affordable and the number of problems from either the man or the woman or both will determine the cost of IVF,” he stated.
