.As Katsina holds Pillars in opener

Aiteo Cup champion, Akwa United has vowed to make it a good start at home when it hosts Rangers today at the Uyo Nest of champions, in what easily is the star match of the Nigeria premier league week one.

Akwa’s head coach, Abdul Maikaba said yesterday that his boys after a solid pre season build up are ready to fire on all cylinders against the Enugu Flying Antelopes.

“We are ready for the season. We hope to start well against Rangers. We know it would be a tough battle given the pedigree of Rangers,” Maikaba said.

Meanwhile, the league started on a “golden” note yesterday in Katsina with host, Katsina United forcing Kano Pillars to a 2-2 draw. Pillars were almost running away with the maximum points as they led 2-1 until the 94th minute when Katsina United drew level courtesy of Destiny Ashadi.

Pillars drew the first blood in 33rd minute when Junior Lokosa found the back of the net. Katsina fought back and got the equalizer in the 45th with Chinedu Ajana doing the job.  Pillars went in front again in the 61st minute with Alhassan Ibrahim the goal scorer.  Katsina United fought until the very last minute and got rewarded with an added on time goal to the delight of their fans.

Action would continue today with matches in Nnewi, Uyo, Owerri, Makurdi, Umuahia, Lafia and Jos, where Wikki Tourists have been banished to.
