Following the impressive pre-season run of Rivers United, goalkeeper Abiodun Akande has set his sights high with the Port Harcourt based club ahead of the commencement of the 2016/17 NPFL season as he believes that they can go all the way to clinch the title. The former Nigeria U23 shot stopper who joined the South-south club from Sunshine Stars during the second round of last season in a chat with Daily Sunsport said that United players were full of confidence of winning three titles in the upcoming season adding that they will have a decent run in the Federation Cup and the CAF Champions League.
“I am happy that I am with Rivers United this season and my aim is to perform well whenever I’m called upon to duty because I don’t fear challenges and by His special grace, I hope to win the title with United in the upcoming campaign “Last season, we finished as runners-up narrowly losing the title to Enugu Rangers and this new season, we are confident of building on last campaign’s feat by winning three titles; the League, Federation Cup and the CAF Champions League.
“Although, it will not be so easy considering that there are lots of strong teams in those competitions but our mission is to give our best and try to play each game like a cup final with discipline and hard work which are the objectives of this football club.
“ We have players that can do that and with the motivation and support from the fans and with our pre-season form which saw us emerged as the NPFL Super-4 Champions and the Shehu Dikko Cup, we are going to do more than what Chelsea are presently doing in the English Premier League.”
The 2016 Super-4 Champions will face El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in the opening fixture of 2016/17 campaign slated for January 15th in Port Harcourt.
