.As Akwa Utd eyes top spot

By George Aluo

Rivers United yesterday compounded the league woes of relegation threatened 3SC with a 1-0 home victory in the only NPFL match decided this weekend.

Organisers of the league, the LMC had last week moved all the match day 26 matches to Wednesday with the exception of the Rivers United, 3SC tie.

John Odumegwu’s 21st minute strike was all Rivers United needed to secure the maximum points. The loss means 3SC would remain in the bottom axis of the league log, even as Coach Fatai Amao’s job is threatened, no thanks to the poor run of the Oluyole Warriors.

Amao had before the Port Harcourt trip been issued a three- match ultimatum which he must win or get fired.

Meanwhile, Akwa United’s midfielder, Afeez Aremu has assured supporters of the club that they would put in everything into their remaining league games in a bid to finish well at the end of the season.

The Promise Keepers are fourth on the league log – with only a point away from a top three spot – after 25 round of matches. They are away this midweek to Remo Stars in Sagamu.

Aremu who spoke ahead of the Sagamu tie stated: “We are in good shape and we have to keep it up. The closing weeks of the season is when you stay near the top or fall away. This team is too strong to fall apart at this crucial stage.”
