The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife branch, has stopped the remittance of check-off dues to its national body as a result of the fall-out of the crisis rocking the union.
The congress of the union, which met on May 17, passed the resolution to stop the payment of the check-off dues with effect from May 2017.
The congress had mandated the caretaker committee to write a letter to the acting Vice Chancellor for the stoppage of deduction of the branch check-off dues.
It berated the national President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, for his greed, noting ‘’at time when there is a crisis in the branch, the president is only interested in our money and not how to resolve the crisis. Hence, he unilaterally wrote to banks to violate their mandate which is a clear violation of our rights as contributors,’’.
In a letter to the acting VC, the union asked the university administration to stop the check-off dues with immediate effect, pending the resolution of the crisis within the branch.
The letter signed by the chairman, caretaker committee of ASUU OAU branch, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, state that the branch would write at any point it rescinds on the decision.
According to Dr. Sunmonu, over 600 members signed to endorse the stoppage of the check-off dues following the action of the national president to support the suspended former executive of the union.
Sunmonu disclosed that as a result of the crisis rocking OAU ASUU, the branch secretariat has been put under lock and key since October 20, 2016 by his members to stop the suspended exco from operating from there.
He explained that the national body despite the overwhelming mandate enjoined by the caretaker committee with over 600 members, has refused to recognize it but rather chose to deal with suspended excutive with less than 20 members.
