• Tells govs to stop keeping money in foreign banks

From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

Former Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Mbang, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as “the best presisdent Nigeria ever had.”

Mbang also called on state governors, politicians and public office holders in the country to stop stashing away money in foreign banks.

Mbang, a former president of the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), said this, yesterday, when he preached at Obasanjo’s 80th birthday thanksgiving service, held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State.

The service was attended by some African leaders, clerics, governors, security chiefs, captains of industry, traditional rulers and top government functionaries.

Mbang’s sermon, titled “The Quality of Our Gratitude to God,” said people in public offices should rather invest in the development of their communities, rather than taking away money abroad to develop foreign economies.

“Some politicians keep their money in Switzerland instead of using it to develop their respective communities like Obasanjo has done. This achievement of Obasanjo will outlive him. The story of what he has done will be told everywhere and his deeds will outlive him. For those of you here, what have you done for your communities? It is a shame that most of the governors now do not know what continuity in government means,” the former CAN president said.

The cleric, then, flayed selfish politicians whom he described as chameleons and added, “politicians change their minds like chameleons. Today, they are in PDP; tomorrow, they go to APC and before you know it, they are back in PDP. They are always fighting war without end. Shame on you all.”

The retired Methodist prelate, who lauded Obasanjo for building the presidential library, however, said Obasanjo was successful while in office because he usually organised morning prayers and fond of bringing his government’s policies for prayers before introducing them to the country.

He recalled how the former president ensured a chapel was built in Aso Rock within three months of resumption of office.

“Obasanjo is the best president Nigeria will ever have.

“OBJ is successful because of his reverence for God. As a president, he usually organised morning prayers, not just with his family, but everybody. Before he became the president in 1999, Aso Villa had 12 mosques but could not boast of any chapel, but Obasanjo, within three months of resumption of office, built a chapel for Christians to worship.

“Apart from that, he would always bring any policies of his government for prayers before introducing them. He is the best president Nigeria will ever have.

“If successive governments had followed his policies, especially his agricultural policies, Nigeria would have been better today,” he said.
