Ex – President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is being honoured with a youth football championship to begin November, 2017 by one of his sons, Ajani Olujuwon Obasanjo.
Ajani, a sports enthusiast, who is initiating the one-month long championship says it is only fitting that he dedicates the tourney to his father who he claims achieved so much in sports while he reigned as the country’s president.
“My father achieved so much in sports while in office as Nigeria’s President. Apart from the fact he likes taking part in sporting activities, particularly squash, my father ensured he invested in infrastructure as well as in the sports sector for optimal results.
“So, as I begin my own journey into investing in sports development through this humble contribution, I cannot but acknowledge and appreciate my father’s giant strides in sports,” he said.
It will be recalled that it was in Obasanjo’s tenure that Nigeria built the Abuja National Stadium in which the hugely successful COJA 2003 8th All – Africa Games was held. It was the first time Nigeria also won the Games.
