Labour Party (LP) Vice Presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared that the only factor uniting Nigeria is the candidacy of Peter Obi.

Datti, who spoke on a television interview, yesterday, posited that his party’s ideology resonates pleasantly with Nigerians and serves as the factor that is uniting Nigeria.

“It gives hope and it is already uniting Nigeria in advance. There is a lot of hope for better life, security and unification of Nigeria. The single most important factor uniting Nigeria is the candidacy of Obi and the candidacy of others is doing otherwise,” he said.

According to Datti, his party’s candidate is driven by his records of accomplishment in a bid to lead Nigeria.

He claimed that the candidates of the other parties emerged on the basis of their wealth and power rather than competence.

Furthermore, he lamented that the even after 24 years of democratic rule, the reality of politics in Nigeria does not meet the requirements of true democracy.

According to him, democracy should be based on three philosophical conditions, including “democracy must not be about individuals or groups, it must be about a political entity for it to qualify as democratic. It is about national and bigger interests; the aspirations, desires and will of the people must reflect in their elections; and as provided in the constitution, the people must hold the power on whose behalf the elected government exercises its authority.

“What we have now is that government once elected holds the power and exercise the authority. By submission, condition two is not there and condition three is questionable. Therefore, our democracy needs to be strengthened by the will of the people reflecting in the 2023 elections.

“If after 24 years and eight years of promises to the world we have suffered this kind of disappointment, the cry of every Nigerian, 2023 election results if it does not reflect the pain in the heart of Nigerians, then this is anything but democracy,” he said.
