Ogun State Government has adopted a nine-year-old minor, Korede Taiwo, who was chained for weeks by his father for stealing in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of the state.
The boy, who was rescued by the Nigeria Civil Defence Corp and the Nigerian Police, was admitted  to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
Speaking during a visit to the boy at the hospital, wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun expressed satisfaction over his  health.  She said  the state would take up the responsibility of   sponsoring his education.
“I am happy to see him active and responding to treatment and with the way things are, he would soon be discharged from the hospital. The state government has taken full responsibility and would ensure his safety and his education,” she said.
Mrs Amosun condemned the ill-treatment of the boy by his father, and charged parents to take good care of their children by providing for them to avoid situation that could lead them into stealing and other vices.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye said  the state government would give the child the best in the areas of medical and social support, explaining that Korede would still be at the hospital for another week to enable him recover fully.
The Head of Department of Paediatric, at the hospital, Dr.  Morufat Ogundeyi said he was admitted for child abuse and chronic malnutrition and also being investigated if he has any other infection.
Ogundeyi said Korede needs special care and rehabilitation to help him develop and interact well with other children. She said  the child was mentally alert, and if given opportunity he would do well like any normal child of his age.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olumide Ayeni said the present administration has zero tolerance for all forms of abuse.
He noted that the case had been taken over in line with due process, adding that the culprit would be brought to book.
