Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has dedicated his re-election victory to God and urged his opponents and all Deltans to join him in building a greater state.
Speaking at a special thanksgiving service in Asaba, yesterday, Okowa also thanked the people of the state for renewing his mandate.
The governor’s wife, Dame Edith, wife of the deputy governor, Ebieri Otuaro, former governor of the state, James Ibori and members of the National Assembly, among other dignitaries, attended the service.
“Before the elections, we heard all manners of story, but, we trusted in God; and those who led the campaign trusted in God. I want to appreciate every one of them. I want to appreciate my leader, former governor Ibori. We heard several stories, but, we also asked our own question, ‘how will they do it without the votes of the people?’
“By the grace of God, we won very convincingly in the 23 out of the 25 local government areas of the state, and lost marginally in two councils.
“I must publicly appreciate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for being very firm and fair, and doing what they ought to do as a commission. We must continue to grow and know that whatever we do, it should be in the best interest of the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thanked the people of the state for voting overwhelmingly for Okowa. The party’s state Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Osuoza, in a statement, hailed Deltans for the resounding triumph of the PDP across board, in the 2019 general elections.
Regardless, Delta State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jones Erue, has called for the outright cancellation of the elections, over alleged massive rigging and toxic votes recorded during the polls.
Specifically, he indicted the military and other security operatives over alleged conspiracy with the PDP in the state and INEC officials to perpetrate the rigging against his party. He noted that there were evidences and records of cases of voters intimidation and harassment by the military and other security agents, who he claimed were on the pay roll of PDP at the various wards and units that were APC’s strongholds across the state.
In another development, three corpses were recovered, yesterday, along the Benin River, in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.
