Oyo State House of Assembly has confirmed the chairman of the state Housing Corporation, Adebayo Lawal, as new deputy governor of the state.

Lawal, who had served as Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state, is to serve as a replacement for the removed deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan.

The nomination of Lawal was confirmed by the state House of Assembly in less than one hour after Olaniyan was impeached. Governor Seyi Makinde had sent Lawal’s name to the lawmakers for consideration in a letter from the Executive to the lawmaker, which was presented on Monday at the plenary.

The lawmakers had gone on a short recess after removing Olaniyan from office as the deputy governor. They reconvened some minutes thereafter for the plenary. At the resumed sitting, the speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, read the letter from the Executive.

He explained that the letter from the executive was in response to a letter, dated Monday July 18, 2022 that was sent by the House of Assembly to the governor, informing him of the removal of Olaniyan from office.

The Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, moved the motion for confirmation of Lawal, which was seconded by Kazeem Olayanju, The Speaker, Ogundoyin, put the nomination to a voice vote. The majority of the lawmakers voted in favour of the nomination.

Meanwhile, the House has adjourned till Thursday July 21, 2022.
