The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 governorship poll in Oyo State, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who is the Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), has formally declared Mr. Oluseyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the keenly-contested governorship election.

He returned Makinde winner of the poll after he scored a total of 515,621 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled a total of 357,982 votes. Makinde, who won in 28 out of the 33 local government areas of the state, won the contest with 157,639 votes.

Ogundipe said by scoring 515,621 votes, “I take it that Oluseyi Makinde of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner, and he’s returned elected.”

He stated that the state had a total number of 2,934,107 registered voters, and a total number of 940,211 voters were accredited for the poll, adding that the total valid votes cast stood at 916,860, and the total rejected votes were 20,685, while total votes cast were 937,545.
