The police headquarters in Abuja has said that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of one Ogar Jumbo, an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), allegedly killed by some police officers at Nyanya, Abuja.

The deceased who was said to be an Assistant Superintendent with the NSCDC), was allegedly beaten to death for a traffic violation at Nyanya, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Already, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Bala Ciroma, has ordered the arrest of two police traffic wardens who were involved in the argument.

Addressing journalists on the matter, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, who said the incident happened at about 9 O’clock in the morning, added that the deceased was driving with his wife when he violated traffic regulations and was stopped by two traffic warden officers.

He also said that the police were not aware that he was a staff of the NSCDC, as he was only wearing a pair of the trousers of the service and not the complete uniform.

Mba, who condemned the attack, however, noted that the traffic wardens who committed the offense were not armed as it was being speculated in the media.

He also explained that the officer slumped and died during interrogation at the police station where he was taken to after his arrest.

He said: “Let me emphasise that these traffic warden officers did not bear arms as is well known.“

According to him, “on contravention, the NSCDC officer himself, who was putting on a civil shirt on top of his NSCDC trousers, drove himself with the traffic warden officers to the Nyanya police station.

“It was while he was being asked questions and he was responding that he suddenly collapsed.

“On getting to the hospital, he was confirmed dead.

“The corpse has been deposited at the Maitama General Hospital. An autopsy will be conducted on the corpse in the presence of his family particularly, his wife and doctors from the NSCDC to determine that cause of the death and it will be made public.”

Mba, further stated that already the FCT, police commissioner had personally visited the hospital to ascertain the true situation of things where and was told by the medical personnel that there was no gunshot injury on the body of the deceased.

He said the two traffic warden officers who committed the act had been arrested and would be investigated.
