The Katsina Police Command said it had launched a manhunt for two unidentified armed men who attacked the residence of a former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomasie, on Saturday night.

Riding on a motorbike, the gunmen had engaged policemen on guard duty at the house in a gunfight at about 8 pm at the Coomasie GRA residence in Katsina metropolis.

A press statement yesterday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Isah, confirmed that a policeman identified as Sergeant Musa Ibrahim attached to the 27 Police Mobile Squadron, Katsina, was killed in the process.

The statement noted further that a stray bullet also hit another policeman, Corporal Shitu Maikudi, who was later rushed to the General Hospital, Katsina, for treatment.  The statement said: “The hoodlums met stiff resistance from the mobile policemen who prevented them from getting access into the residence.    

“Police patrol teams led by the Commissioner of Police, Bessen D. Gwana, arrived the scene but the hoodlums had already escaped through the dark alleys. 

“Eighteen empty shells of expended ammunition were recovered at the scene. The command is assiduously making efforts to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover their operational arms. Citizens are hereby assured to go about their lawful business without any fear as the command is on top of the situation.”

Coomasie, who is the Sarduanan Katsina, is also Chairman, Board of Trustees of the foremost northern socio-cultural group, the Arewa Consultative Forum.
