A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ibrahim Okanlawon, who died in a boat mishap on Saturday at Agadagba-Obon, Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, has been buried in Akure, on Monday, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Okanlawon served as an ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during last Saturday’s House of Assembly election in Ondo State. 

In a statement by the NYSC state coordinator, Mrs. Grace Akpabio, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, commended the patriotism of the late corps member.

On her part, Akpabio, on behalf of the NYSC director-general, Major General Sulaiman Kazaure, staff and all corps members, expressed condolences to Okanlawon’s family and loved ones.

The deceased corps member, who hailed from Ogun State, died while returning from the polling centre where he had served as a presiding officer.

Okanlawon, a graduate of Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, until his death, served  at Herald of Hope Group of Schools, Ojuala, in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State. 

It was learnt that the speed boat he boarded was returning from Arogbo Ward 2 and capsized at the river bank in Agadagba-Obon.

Two other corps members who sustained injuries were said to be receiving treatment at a private hospital in the area at the time of this report

It was gathered that the deceased had not used life jacket at the time of the mishap and all efforts to rescue him failed.
