The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has ordered transporters to reduce transport fares to any destination by half of the current prices till Sunday, February 24.

But to enjoy this incentive, prospective commuters must present their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) at the point of taking off.

Chairman of the union in Delta State, Ifeanyi Obi, who made this known in Asaba, said the decision to slash fares was reached at the National Executive Council (NEC) of NURTW held in Abuja.

Obi said the move was to encourage voters to travel to their respective voting centres at an affordable cost to cast their votes in Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, “every driver in Delta State is to cut transport fare by half till Sunday, February 24, 2019, for every passenger who has his or her PVC.

“At our NEC meeting, it was resolved that we should encourage every voter by reducing transport fare by half and all motor parks in Delta State are not to collect any levy to encourage them to fuel their vehicles and we have set up a task force to ensure strict compliance of the directives.

“We need to encourage people to vote, transport fare or distance should not stop people from casting their votes and this is our contribution as members of NURTW.

“We advise every traveler to make use of the motor parks located at strategic locations in Delta State; no one should board vehicles along the road for their own safety.”

He expressed confidence that there would be hitch-free elections, noting that Nigerians are well enlightened and would cast their votes according to their conscience for their chosen candidates.
