The shambles called party primaries may be a pointer to the general (secondaries) election in 2019. Let us do what we know how to do best in this country

Femi Adeoti

See what the stinking, dirty primary elections are throwing up in all the political parties! The guiltiest of them all are glaringly obvious. They are the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its fieriest rival, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The two, by default, commission or omission have dominated the political space since 1999. The only difference is the name. The characters are one and the same. And they remain very weird and wild, wherever they pit and/or pitch their tent.

They practically behave the same way, very sordid and awkward. They intimately share one umbilical cord. That makes it easy for them to switch party at the slightest threat to their pockets. It has always been the pocket first before we, the so-called masses. That is why they fight dirty for political posts; particularly the identified juicy ones.

If you were in doubt before, their ongoing primary elections would have convinced and conceived you otherwise. Both the old and the young among them deeply share the same traits.

When it comes to self-interest, the young and the old are in one accord. This eerie attitude cuts across all the parties, including the very remote ones.

So, when the APC consistently accuses its co-conspirators, PDP, of corruption, we laugh our hearts out. It is like a kettle calling a pot black. Of course, it is out of guilty conscience. It is really laughable.

It is even more ridiculous, accusing a single party of destroying the economy in the past 16 years or so. Were states under other parties then anything better? Think of it, who are the characters in these parties?

It is generally agreed that the PDP is like an infection. It has its members scattered in all the parties. These shameless politicians hiding under a new name are simply accusing themselves of being responsible for the system failure.

This is evident in what they are currently churning out in their primaries. By the time they get to the secondary stage in February/March, things would have gone haywire. Things would have fallen apart and the centre would be too fragile to hold.

By that time, things would have become worse. The situation would be under alarm and there would be no reasonable need for control.

It is amazing and amusing what they are doing to secure “mere” party tickets. See how they are displaying their financial muscles with utter impunity. And they made the muscles by milking us dry. They got all the wealth by practically looting and emptying our treasuries.

Yet, they found it convenient and comfortable to use the same ill-gotten wealth to oppress, cow and cajole us to total submission.

How did they do it? They are very “brilliant”, they did it cleverly.

By their policies, actions and inactions, they starved us of everything. We were desperate for anything and everything. We were made naked and left in severe cold, without food, water, road, power, money, et al. They sent us to a bottomless pit of abject poverty.

Then they started graciously to release crumbs from their large table of surplus and abundance. They pretended they cared for us; that was why they wickedly labelled us the masses. And sheepishly and foolishly enough, we began to hail them for at least, “doing something.”

With this our ignorant behaviour, they told us they were “encouraged to do more.” Most of the roads they constructed hardly lasted beyond six months. The water they claimed to supply would grudgingly drop once a week.

Their electricity mostly came in the mould and form of candlelight.

The megawatts keep on nose-diving on a daily basis. We could only access the houses they constructed for us on the internet, we dare not in- habit them. We “proudly” carry these houses and other infrastructure they “provided” on our handsets, tablets, laptops, etc.

That is where they showcase their achievements. They were never physically to be found on ground. This is the tragic build-up being carried into these party primaries. And it is the very reason these ugly scenes are playing out. That is why lots of oddities are rearing their ugly heads. A case of party primaries of the bad, by the ugly and for the worse.

And, you know what, a society gets the type of leadership it deserves.

There is no viable alternative to that. We earnestly asked for it. And we are getting it in full and good measure. It is a huge rip-off. The hyenas, jackals, wolves are at work again. They are in full action.

Can our permanent voters cards (aka PVCs) do the magic? Have our votes ever counted? Will they count this time around? Great doubt!

We are worried, we are afraid. The shambles called party primaries may be a pointer to the general (secondaries) election in 2019. Let us do what we know how to do best in this country:

Pray until something drastic happens positively. Not only that, we must watch, especially, our fragile and delicate back.
