Many people dream of being their own boss and having the freedom to choose what to pursue and when to work. Reco Jefferson has successfully become his own boss, owning and running several businesses. Now he shares what he sees as the top five advantages of working for himself.

The Freedom to Be Creative

For Jefferson, the freedom to be creative and independent is a major advantage. This is his favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur. “Having the freedom to be creative and come up with new business ideas,” he explains. “There’s no one telling me what I have to do. I can choose to do whatever I wish.”

Choosing What Businesses to Grow

Part of that freedom extends to the ability to select what businesses to grow based on your preferred criteria. “I love growing businesses and helping out people in my community. A lot of the businesses I started don’t directly make me money, but they give my employees a place to flourish and make a living.”

Jefferson also appreciates the ability to choose how you want to grow your business. For him, that is “by doing honest business in the first place.” Jefferson explains, “When you take care of your clients and customers, they’ll let others know, and your business will flourish. Fast money never lasts.”

Getting to Work With Other Creative Minds

As your own boss, you get to choose who to work with. When explaining what he loves most about working with others, Jefferson said, “Having the opportunity to get with other creative minds and see their unique perspectives and how they solve problems.”

Feeling a Sense of Accomplishment

Jefferson also points out that when you are your own boss, you are fully responsible for your achievements, giving you a sense of accomplishment. Jefferson explains that the most rewarding part of his job is “that even though I grew up poor, I was still able to build a seven-figure business.”

Not everyone needs to follow the same journey as Jefferson to become their own boss. He spent time in the Air Force and as a software engineer before forming his own business when the need and opportunity arose. Jefferson leaves those with similar goals with these parting words, “If someone has enough drive and common sense, they can reach the same level of success.”
