Suspected thieves at the weekend broke into the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC), Umuahia, Abia State, burgled the ICT Centre  and carted away  some sensitive materials of  the commission.
Among the items that were stolen, which were under the care of a combined team of Army, police, Civil Defense corps and the commission’s security operatives, were five laptop computers that contained information on the last governorship election in the state, files and other documents.
Workers were said to have arrived their duty post yesterday morning to the shocking discovery that  one of the windows of the ICT Centre was damaged.   It was through  the window that the thieves gained entry into the centre and carted away about five laptops with important and sensitive data of the electorate in the state.
An impeccable INEC source told Daily Sun that last weekend’s burglary was the second in one month.
It was learnt that the commission was guarded by people believed to be selected security operatives from various arms  of the security agencies.
All the security operatives on night duty on the fateful day have denied knowledge of what happened at the centre.
The first burglary was said to have led to the commission losing computers with vital information, air conditioners, files and other documents that were important to the commission.
The head of the ICT department, whose name could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, was said to be operating from Enugu.
He was reported to have expressed shock that the break-in could happen in a place where a combined team of security operatives was on duty.
