Rotary Club of Greenfield, Okota, Isolo area of Lagos State recently planted a number of trees and flowers within the Greenfield Estate, Ago Palace Way, Okota, Isolo, Lagos.

The club planted trees and flowers ranging from mangoes trees to Christmas trees, gmelina and even palm trees among others.

Speaking at the event, the club’s Chartered President, Francis Opute, said the exercise which was a new addition to the usual six areas of focus in Rotary was to keep the planet green.

He said the exercise was in response to the demand of the Rotary International, as well as the climate change, which has adversely altered the environment.

“Everybody is aware of the negative effect of climate change in our environment, so we need to plant trees to bring beauty back to the environment as it used to be. We are only doing what the Rotary International asked us to do. This tree planting is to beautify the world and have enough oxygen for us to breathe,” he said.

He promised that the exercise will be carried out next year not in Greenfield Estate but in other areas within the state.

He noted that apart from tree planting, the club equally has other activities ranging from health to education, business and knowledge among others.

“Our free medical exercise is ongoing. Those with such eye problems as cataracts are being treated through surgery,” he said.

Chairman of the Greenfield Estate, Monday Akunna, expressed happiness about the project and commended the Rotary Club for complementing the efforts of the residents.

“We already have a committee named Green Committee. Members of the committee are saddled with the responsibility of taking care of trees and flowers in the estate, and educating residents on how to plant trees and flowers. Now that Rotary has come in, we are grateful to them. It will bring good oxygen to residents because every residential area needs trees for healthy living,” he said.

The immediate past president of the Estate, Nnanna Nwakamma Achugo, said the club had just offered a platform for some of them who have the talent of providing service to humanity to showcase their talents in that regard.

“All the Rotary programmes are geared towards changing lives. We are happy to be part of this and we shall also be part and parcel of whatever programme they are going to do in the estate and beyond. Already, we are green in nature as my chairman has told you, and green is life, so that means we are nurturing lives, and it shall be well with all of us,” he said.
