Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed that only players active in their clubs would be handed call ups for the back to back Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Rohr also ruled out calling injured players as well as those who are just starting off their careers, insisting that he needed players who have experience of playing in top games .
According to the German tactician, the squad he paraded in the 0-2 loss to South Africa can easily pass as the youngest set of players to have played for an African nation in a competitive game, but said the game against Cameroon will see a different approach in terms of players selection.
“For the next game, it will be interesting against Cameroon to have more experience in our team, we had in our last game the youngest team I ever saw in Africa, so Under Under-23 but now for these two games against Cameroon we must call some experience players. Perhaps also somebody who can play in the point of the attack”, Rohr told Owngoalnigeria.com.
‎”‎I cannot call up injured players, it’s not possible I can only call up players who are fit and are playing. It’s not easy in the beginning of the season because there was a long break and some of them had long training camps “, he said.
“Now they are starting the games they play some games like friendlies just like Alex Iwobi who played very well for Arsenal, of course also now we can call Victor Moses because he was injured last time and now he is fit.
“He is a very good player for us. Leon Balogun is also fit, he is experienced and we have also some strikers with a little more experience, Odion Ighalo also not only him. There are also other ones. So I think in the next week we will monitor all of them to be sure, we can take the best ones for these big games against Cameroon”.
