Senate Committee on Sports has summoned the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung, to appear before it to explain why Nigeria failed to participate at the ongoing African Junior Table Tennis Championship in Tunisia.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Obinna Ogba, who made the disclosure frowned at the development revealed that the committee has issued a directive to write the Sports Minister summoning him to appear before the Sports Committee.
Although he did not disclose the date Barr Dalung would make the appearance, Sen. Ogba lamented that the failure to participate in the championship has technically ruled Nigeria out of next year’s junior Olympic Games having missed the qualifying tournament.Stressing that Dalung will during the appearance explain to the Senate Sports Committee the reason behind the continuous postponement of the National Sports Festival, he said: “I have asked the secretary of our committee to summon the Minister of Sports to explain before us the reasons Nigeria missed the African Junior Tennis Championships in Tunisia.
“We also want to know what is delaying the National Sports Festival from holding since the last edition that was held in Lagos in 2012. I want to as a matter of fact say that I am not really happy with what is going on in the sports sector. But we may not blame the Minister completely. I am saying this because I know he is not the chief executive of the country,” Senator Ogba noted.
