FROM: PAUL ORUDE, BAUCHI Senator Ali Wakili, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has disbursed computers and welding tools to 100 unemployed youths in his constituency. The beneficiaries had been trained on welding and computer skills to enable them to be self-reliant in his constituency. Presenting the items to the beneficiaries at the Nation Sports Commission indoor sports hall, in Bauchi, on Wednesday , Sen. Wakili said the gesture was part of his 2016 Constituency Project, stressing that skills acquisition remained one of the biggest weapons of tackling poverty. Daily Sun reports that 56 youths were trained on Basic Computer literacy by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), while 44 underwent welding and fabrication under the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology , Zaria. The beneficiaries were expected to start up micro businesses with the knowledge acquired and the equipment donated by the senator. Wakili, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation, charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items for the benefit of their lives and their families. He assured the constituents that he would continue to initiate youth empowerment and skills acquisition programmes that would uplift the living standard of the people of his constituency. Earlier in his speech, Director General of NDE, Dr. Mohammed Ladan Argungu, commended Sen. Wakili for his efforts, saying the senator has empowered thousands of his constituents to set up micro enterprises of their own within their local communities thereby contributing to economic growth. Argungu, represented by the Deputy Director Vocational Skills of the directorate, Aliyu Abubakar, also commended the senator for his philanthropic gestures and patriotic sense of responsibility. In a similar vein, the Director General of NIIT, Dr. Aminu Musa Yusuf, who was represented by Director Training of the Institute, Dr. Bayaro Fara, said that Sen. Wakili’s intervention was timely in view of the unemployment situation in the country. Yusuf stressed that as skills acquisition is not only crucial for national development but also serves to reduce crime and eliminate poverty as well as reduce joblessness. He assured the senator that the doors of the Institute are open for such partnership and its renewed c commitment towards providing best quality training, as he urged the beneficiaries to utilise the materials provided them. |
