A former Minister of Water Resources, Muktar Shehu Shagari, on Wednesday, urged accountants and financial practitioners to put in more effort in the fight against corruption .
Shehu spoke in Abuja at the launch of a book “Fundamentals of Accounting ” written by Prof. Ugwudioha Ofili, Head of Department (HOD), Accounting, Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja.
The former Minister, who stated that corruption has given Nigeria, a negative image worldwide, said accountants can change the tide.
He said: “I urge accountants to key in the fight against corruption in Nigeria, because it has painted a negative image in the country. If we all love Nigeria the way we love our wives; the way we make sacrifices for them, why can’t we all do that for our country Nigeria.
“Nigeria will be good or bad depending on what you do in the nearest future, always have it in your hearts that Nigeria is ours, and that only you can make it a better place. Knowledge is the only compass that we can use to navigate our way from the tides we have been to a better place.”
Shagari also lauded Nile University Abuja for their tremendous efforts in offering quality education to Nigerians and said that in no distant time, Nile University will be amongst the leading varsities in the nation.
According to him, “I have seen the progress in this institution , so I want to also say that very soon, Nile University will compete with institutions in America. I am also hopeful that this institution will represent Nigeria just as Harvard University represents the United States of America.”
