National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi have disagreed over Nigeria’s proposed restructuring.
While Makarfi said there was nothing wrong with the clamour for restructuring of the country, the Sheriff-led NWC said restructuring is not part of the PDP manifesto.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, yesterday, Makarfi, however said any restructuring of the country must take a critical look at the present structure of country and institutions, with a view to giving the country a new sense of direction.
He said the opposition party has no problem with individuals or groups agitating for one thing or the other, but that in doing so,  they must avoid infringing on the right of other Nigerians.
“It is, therefore, not out of place for any or all segment(s) to come up with ideas that they believe will strengthen the structures of our federalism with a view to restructuring it in such a way that it serves all of us and not just some of us.
“We, however, observe the restructuring could mean a different thing to different people. It is important that we consider the framework within which we can even discuss and be on the same page as to what kind of restructuring we mean or desire; and if nationally accepted, agree on frame work for its implementation.
On the October 1, 2017 ultimatum given to Igbo to leave the North, Makarfi said such quit notices are ill wind,  that will not blow anyone any good.
He said hate speeches must be condemned by all, irrespective of whether they are made by northerners or southerners.
However, acting spokesman of the Sheriff-led NWC, Bernard Mikko challenged Makarfi to show the part of PDP manifesto where restructuring is listed as part of the programmes of the party.
He also challenged Makarfi to put details of what he want to be restructured on the table.
“What is he restructuring? This nation must be put in the right perspective. The economy must be put right, we must get out of recession, create jobs, when we have addressed all these, we can look at the fundamental reform.”
According to him,  Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians. Consequently,  every Nigeria must be allowed to enjoy the constitutionally guaranteed right to live in any part of the country they like.
Makarfi, while lauding the effort of of the acting president,  Yemi Osinbajo,  in engaging with stakeholders across the country to douse tension, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtue of respect for another so as to ensure that there is peace in the country.
“The recent altercation between some of our people which degenerated into the issuance of ultimatum and counter ultimatum for some of us to leave certain areas is an ill wind that blows no good, more so that we have a sad history of no so dissimilar circumstances that we had better not allow a repeat. Hate speeches either coming from the North, South, East or West must be avoided and be condemned by all of us.
“This country belongs to all of us, and every one of us must be allowed to enjoy the constitutional guarantee of freedom to live and move about this vast God-blessed land without let or hindrance to pursue his or her legitimate endeavours,”he noted.
The PDP leader also condemned the spate of clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the country and the rising cases of kidnapping nationwide. He called on security agencies to rise to the occasion.
