A former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Delta State, Ovuozourie Macaulay has appealed to government at all levels and well meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the parents of co-joined twins delivered at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara.

Macaulay who is the immediate past Secretary to the State Government (SSG), made the appeal when he visited the couple at the hospital, describing the birth of the co-joined twins as a miracle.

The male twins were delivered last week to a youth corps member (father) and a full time house wife (mother).

Hence, Macaulay is making the appeal for government and well meaning citizens to assist the parents in ensuring the survivals of the new arrivals.

He commended the hospital management for the medical breakthrough, urging them to intensify efforts on the costing.

A management staff of the hospital who does not want to be named in print because she is not authorised to speak, said the co-joined twins also known as Siamese were delivered through a caesarian section, adding that the cost of performing the surgery to separate the twins was yet to be determined.

She disclosed that antenatal scans so far revealed that the babies have two kidneys, two hearts but one liver, adding that post natal scan is yet to be conducted to ascertain the true position.

According to her, the babies both weigh 4.6 kg at birth with one umbilical vein, and that they are both on oxygen and stable except for a slight recorded case of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, with the twin two having cleft lip.

She also disclosed that American expatriates would be flown in for the surgery, but hinted, however, that the parents apparently lacked the wherewithal to finance the cost of effective surgery.
