Oluseye Ojo, Ibadan

The site engineer in charge of a three-storey building that collapsed last Friday, at Shogoye area of Idi-Arere, Ibadan, may land in trouble soon.

The indication emerged as Oyo State Government, yesterday, said the engineer’s whereabouts is unknown, as he has refused to show up to explain, in writing, what caused the tragedy, which may make the government to report him to the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), to probably deregister him.

Director General of Bureau of Physical Planning and Development Control in the state, Waheed Gbadamosi, made the disclosure in a telephone interview with Daily Sun, yesterday, in Ibadan. He said the government had, on Monday, summoned the site engineer of the collapsed Asfau-Aqhi building, and he refused to honour the invitation.

Gbadamosi said the option left for the government “is that we will officially report him to COREN.”

The three-storey building collapsed at about 5:34p.m  last Friday, and all the trapped site workers were rescued alive, though those who sustained injuries have been hospitalised.

Gbadamosi noted that the preliminary reports on the possible cause of the disaster revealed that standard materials were used for the construction, but “we’ve found out that they did not allow the curing period to lapse before they continued with the construction.
