The accredited Domestic Observers Monitoring Elections in Sokoto State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies deployed to the state to ensure peaceful and credible rerun elections in the state.

The leader of the team, Comrade Victor Kalu on Friday, while addressing journalists also called on INEC to make all the sensitive materials especially the smart card readers and personnel available in time in the affected areas for timely commencement of elections in the affected areas so as to correct all administrative shortfalls witnessed in the previous elections.

Kalu said: “Security agents should be professional and discharge their duties to ensure a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the election.

“They should not overzealously interfere in the process or be seen to be intimidating innocent citizens, just as over-militarisation of our elections is not healthy for us as a democratic nation.

“The struggle for superiority among the security agents on election duty should be discouraged and stop forthwith, rather a working and healthy synergy should be enough among them for the good of the country.”

The observers also called on the leading political parties and stakeholders to ensure that the state held peaceful elections by sensitising their teaming supporters with the message of peace.

It further advised the media to be more committed to promoting peaceful co-existence in the country by being more professional and objective in their reportage especially at this time of politicking.
