Tunde Omolehin, Sokoto

Saturday’s supplementary governorship election in Sokoto State featured large turnout of voters amid tension. Our reporter observed massive deployment of security operatives to the areas where the election was held.

The supplementary election held in 22 out of the state’s 23 local government areas.

Only residents of Tangaza local government were not part of the estimated 75,403 voters that participated in the election across 135 polling units, with Kebbe and Gada local government areas topping with 20,015 and 13,314 voters respectively.

Also Kebbe, Gada and Sokoto North LGAs have the highest polling units of 35, 29 and 10 respectively while Gudu, Isa, Kware, Tureta, Wamakko and Yabo local government areas have one polling unit each.

Recall that the collated results by INEC Returning Officer in the State, Professor Fatima Batulu Mukthar, had shown Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in the lead with 489,558 votes ahead of Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto of the APC, who polled 486,145 votes.

The election however, ended in a stalemate as the 3,413 votes margin was adjudged far less than the cancelled votes for various reasons, totalling 75,403 votes.

However, result so far recorded in some polling units shows that both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) are in a tight race.
