In the spirit of moulding and imbibing democratic principles in Nigeria’s younger generation, Star Diamond International School, Ojodu Berger, Lagos State, recently inducted elected prefects for the primary and secondary arms of the school.

The ceremony was attended by guests, parents, staff as well as the students with the school’s proprietress, Mrs. Hope Kome, describing the event as epoch-making. She commended the principal, Mr. Bayo Ogunsola, the head teacher, Mr. Patrick Njoku and the teaching staff for adopting a participatory, innovative and informative method that afforded the student-electorate to not only be engaged but also exposed to democratic principles:

“It is really gratifying as an educationist that we are trying to mould the future generations to embrace democratic principles, most especially on election. Values are learnt from early ages and what we have done is to create the right platform to initiating these kids to their constitutional responsibilities as citizens of this country. We hope to imbibe in them responsibilities of the offices they have been elected into.”

Mr. Lucky Oizimende who swore in the elected students said: “I am deeply impressed with this engaging platform that affords the students to have a practical experience of an electoral process. The whole idea is to catch them young and the school has done exceptionally well by allowing the students to take part in the process.”

Njoku expressed the belief that the event would remain indelible in the students’ memory, especially those in primary schools whom were seen excitedly canvassing and convincing their colleagues for votes:

“It won’t end here; this is just the beginning. Henceforth, we would always use this participatory and engaging process, which I believe is also an educational tool for the students.”
