Rose Ejembi, Makurdi

Former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam and House of Representatives member representing Buruku Federal Constituency, have emerged winners of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial primaries for the Benue North East and Benue North West respectively.

However, the election could not hold in Benue South Senatorial district as it was postponed indefinitely following an alleged doctoring of the delegates list by one of the three contenders.

Jev beat three other contestants to pick the PDP senatorial ticket for Benue North West Senatorial District while Suswam who was the sole PDP aspirant emerged unopposed in the primary.

Announcing the Benue North West result on Wednesday morning at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Chairman, PDP Senatorial Electoral Panel, Mrs Ifeoma Enigbue, declared Jev winner, having polled 591 votes to defeat his closest rival Mike Mku, who scored 333 votes.

Enigbue who was represented by Mr Cletus Tyokyaa also disclosed that Mrs Georgina Kundu-Gbayan, the only female contestant in the race got seven votes while Dooyum Iyom got one vote.

He said a total of 835 adhoc delegates voted as well as all statutory delegates. Some of the statutory delegates at the primaries were; Gov Samuel Ortom, ex Senate President, Dr Iorchia Ayu, Reps Dickson Tarkighir and Reps Mark Gbillah.

In his acceptance speech, Jev thanked his people of Benue North West Senatorial District for their support and further assured them of good representation saying he is determined to serve them better as a senator.

On the other hand, Suswam was returned unopposed for the Benue north east senatorial district after delegates affirmed him with their votes at the exercise held in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of the state.

Meanwhile the PDP primary election for the Benue south senatorial district between Comrade Abba Moro, Chief Mike Onoja and Joe Ojobo could not hold due to some unresolved issues within the party in the zone.

The exercise was initially billed to hold in Otukpo but was later postponed indefinitely by the national committee who returned to Makurdi with the electoral materials.

Although, no definite reason was given for the postponement of the exercise but our correspondent learnt that a new date for the exercise would be announced soon.

As at the time of filing this report, the ruling APC in Benue is preparing to conduct its Senatorial primaries slated for Wednesday.
