A Syrian terrorist suspect in German custody hung himself in his jail cell, the Justice Ministry in Hamburg said on Wednesday.

Abdullah K was arrested in June alongside his three brothers on suspicion of membership in the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria that later split from the group and changed its name to Jabhat Fatah al-Sham.

The ministry said there had been no indication that Abdullah K had been suicidal, and that he had seemed “stable’’ during an assessment by a psychologist on Aug. 25.
