Then  Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Jn 8: 12.

We   see one of the “I am(s)” of Jesus Christ in the scripture and of course we know of the Old Testament account where God said I AM THAT I AM, showing that God has always been. We also know that  Christ has always been and because he has always been, he is everything to anyone that he wants to have anything to do with at any time.  We  are, however, taking the aspect of the light of the world, when he said I am the light of the world.  It is Christ saying very profoundly that  He is the light of the world.

We can then understand that to mean if Christ is not there, then there is no light; if Christ is not in the world then the world is in spiritual darkness  and of course it was so at the very beginning when God created the heavens and the earth.

The  bible records that the world  was void, without form and darkness covered the whole earth until God the Almighty father spoke and that word that was spoken is Christ and it says ‘’let there be light’’ it was from that moment on that there was light in the world and Jesus is repeating it here and saying very clearly ‘’I am the light of the world’’.

In    other words if Christ is not in the world, then there is no light, if Christ is not in a man’s life then there is no life in that man’s life; if Christ is not in a particular family, if Christ is absent there is no light in that family. You  can imagine the level of darkness that could be in that kind of family; if Christ is not in a person’s business , you can be sure that there would be no light there; if Christ is not in a particular situation then there can be no light there and when there is no light  the only thing you can expect is darkness. Wherever  there is the absence of Jesus Christ it’s total darkness and when we mean total darkness. it means the devil has access, the demons have access and every work of darkness, every work of evil would have access to that kind of house.

This explains why you find that in any house,  where you don’t have Jesus Christ you can see the level of witchcraft, you can see the level of wickedness, you can see the level of evil that is committed, you can see the shrine, you can  see the emptiness, the darkness, you can see men worshiping  idols,  wood , worshiping stone because Christ is not there. Do you also observe that communities that have no Christ are always backward. Civilisation is far from those communities and idol worshiping would be in vogue.

He says I am the light of the world, if he is not there then there is no light, so we see it very clearly, that Jesus Christ is the  light of the world. We  know that in John 1:3-4 the bible says it very clearly that He, Jesus Christ is the one who created all things and it says to us in him was life and that life is the light of men. Put differently the light that lightens the world, that lightens men proceeds only out of Jesus, so if  Jesus is not in a man’s life, that life is in complete darkness and I believe that somebody that is reading this piece is beginning to think and ask the following questions:  (i) Is Christ actually in my life? (ii) Is Christ actually living in me?

And you can begin to think of the kind of things you do, the kind of emptiness you find yourself in, the kind of void that you see around you and you can also see the emptiness and the spiritual  blindness.

Can you imagine that a person with all the education and yet still bows down to graven images. It only shows that   darkness has taken over in that place and it is only when Christ comes into your life that light comes in and darkness would disappear, that’s the interesting thing about it.  Anytime  light comes into a place darkness must flee and that light proceeds out of Jesus Christ.

Do you have Christ in your life? That  is the big question today and I pray everyone that is reading this message, and who has not received Christ, will decide to receive him into his/her heart. If you are ready I will encourage you to   say “Lord! Come into my heart” and at the same time accept him as your Lord and saviour. You will he saved by so doing. Believe that he died for you and rose from the dead, that is it; when you believe he died for you and rose from the dead then you have life, you are saved.  As  many as are reading this sermon, and have decided to allow Christ come into their lives will surely have the light of life in the  name of the Lord Jesus  Christ. And as you open up your heart may the Lord come in there.  Even  if you have received Christ before and you have backslide  into sin and darkness; if you return now, He will also accept you, so I pray for all such people too, in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you return to him may you have life.
