THE Sun Publishing Limited, publishers of Daily Sun, Saturday Sun, Sunday Sun and Sporting Sun, has been honoured and recognised for promoting peace, sound educative reporting, innovative ideas, human and sustainable developments.
It was awarded at the fourth annual summit of Damian U.M. Azubuike Foundation. The newspaper organisation was eulogised for always standing on the side of truthful journalism.
With the theme, ‘ICT and Infrastructure: the Global Issue and Expanding Sustainable Development’, the foundation, according to the convener, Azubuike Nnamdi, advocated a prompt use of technological innovation in solving growing security concerns and other developmental process of the country’s dwindling economy.
According to Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in his keynote address, read by his representative, Ephraim Nwokenneya, the importance of ICT in solving societal problems cannot be overemphasised. He declared that the world of ICT was a viable economic option that government could tap into in boosting her diminishing oil revenues.
“The revolution in the ICT sector in the past 15 years is a clear indication that there are much rich endowments in our country beyond oil and gas resources,” he added.
Danbatta itemised lofty provisions and impacts that ICT has contributed to the growth of the economy since the wake of Nigerian democracy. He pointed out that its input in education with endless possibilities is always a point to reckon with to attain growth. He also mentioned ICT’s vital contributions to governance and security in detecting ghost workers, and making arrests of criminal elements in the country. He emphasised its contribution to job creation and growth in the country.
