GEOFFREY ANYANWU, AWKA
THE purported election of Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah as the chairman, Anambra State Football Association on Tuesday has deepened the crisis that had bedeviled the state FA for some years now, as some stakeholders and candidates yesterday described it as a sham and an illegality.
Ubah was reported to have been elected State FA chairman in the early hours of Tuesday in a hotel room in Awka, an action some stakeholders described as an insult to the sensibility of the members of the association and Anambra State at large.
One of the candidates for the election, Mr. Olisa Aniuno, who addressed newsmen yesterday said it was unfortunate that some people had decided to ensure that Anambra FA did not survive by putting up actions that were unacceptable in any enlightened society.
Aniuno, who threatened legal action if the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) refused to come and conduct legitimate FA election in Anambra state, noted that the chairman of the Anambra state Normalization Committee sent by NFF to conduct the election, Mr. Emma Chukwuemeka had announced and published the timetable for the election, which included screening on Monday, May 2, 2016; publishing of names of those that scaled through the screening. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 and election proper, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 and wondered how he went in the dark to announce somebody winner in an election yet to be conducted.
