The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka has emerged as the best ranked university in Nigeria for 2023 by Times Higher Education (THE).
The World ranking of UNILAG also improved as among 1,799 universities in the World, the university is ranked 401-500 globally by Times Higher Education.
The news of UNILAG improved ranking by Times Higher Education was broken to Daily Sun by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa at the education summit in Lagos organized by the Education Writers’Association of Nigeria (EWAN).
Prof. Atsenuwa, who was all simile, said “we have done it again. We are the best university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education Report today (Wednesday).”
The news of the improved ranking sparked celebration among the top management staff, lecturers and students.
According to Times Higher Education World university ranking for 2023, the survey involves 1, 799 universities in 104 countries and regions, “making it the largest and most diverse university ranking to date.”
The Times Higher Education said the table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution performance across four areas; teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
“This year’s ranking analysed over 121million citations across more than 15.5million research publications and included survey,” it explained.
The THE acknowledged a rapid improvement in African sector, noting, “number of African countries in rankings doubles since 201, with 25 universities making debut appearances this year.”
The body said it has been providing trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, academics, university, leaders, government and industry since 2004.
“We create university ranking to assess university performance on the global stage and to provide a resource for readers to understand the different missions and successes of higher education institutions.”
The ranking shows that the top three best universities in the World are University of Oxford, United Kingdom, followed by Harvard University, United States and University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
