On March 19 there was a tense atmosphere in Rivers as the rerun legislative election was held in the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections for 22 of the 32 state House of Assembly seats, 12 of the 13 House of Representatives seats and the three Senatorial Districts.
However, elections in Gokhana, Khana, Andoni, Bonny local government areas of the state have been postponed; the date for a rerun is yet to be announced. Nick Dazang, the INEC’s deputy director of public affairs, explained that the elections were suspended in the areas because of violence.
As polling units have been already closed, counting of ballot papers has commenced and Nigerians are patiently waiting for election results.
